The city government will outline the continuation on Monday.

At Imatra, a concept study of a wooden sports hall has been carried out until the end of 2020 with the support of the Ministry of the Environment. The report will be completed in March.

Now it's time to expand the project with even more purposeful planning. The city government will process deepening the planning work next Monday at their meeting.

A carbon-neutral sports hall has been designed in connection with the ice rink in Ukonniemi.

To build next year?

The current sports hall is in need of extensive renovation. A condition assessment has been made for the object, which has been supplemented with condition tests and more detailed tests.

─ According to the needs assessment, the old sports hall does not meet the requirements of the various sports active in Imatra. In the analysis, the new construction option can better meet the needs of the industry and is the most cost-effective solution, Mitra's CEO Lassi Nurmi says.

In 2020, numerous local problems have been identified in the sports hall, for example related to indoor air, as well as construction errors that cause inconvenience and service interruptions. These findings increase the need for renovation and increase the cost estimate of the renovation even more. It is a total of around 12,3 million euros.

The Ministry of the Environment has launched a new funding application program for the development of wood construction. Imatra toimitilat Oy now proposes that the company will apply for new funding from the Ministry of the Environment as a continuation of the concept study, in order to start the preparation of the project plan for the sports hall. A maximum of EUR 150 is available for funding, which covers 000 percent of the project's funding.

The project plan aims for the investment decision to be made next summer at the earliest, and construction could start in 2022.

A steering group will be established for project planning, preparation of the investment decision and construction project management.
