"Three are hard to touch, three lakes are noble, three mountains are high under the cover of this air: Hämehess' is Hälläpyörä, Kaatrakoski in Karelia; no one has conquered Vuoksen, gone over Imatra." Kalevala
Vuoksi is a tributary of the Saimaa watershed that flows down to Laatokka, which was born with enormous force about 5700 years ago, leaving behind a line of rapids on its way to Laatokka. The biggest rapid is Imatrankoski. The height difference between Saimaa and Laatoka is about 70 meters. On the Finnish side of the river there are Tainionkoski and Imatrankoski, both of which are dammed. The Imatrankoski power plant, completed in 1929, is still the largest hydropower plant in Finland.
Vuoksi's fishing is hundreds of years old, even the first mentions of Imatra tell about Vuoksi's salmon catches. In the 1800th century, St. Petersburg and English aristocrats discovered the rich fishing waters of Vuoksi and established their own fishing bases here. The English had the Wuoksi Fishing Club and the Russians practiced fishing from their own yards along the Vuoksi.
Most of the Vuoks flows on the Russian side.
