The area will become an even more attractive camping spot. This year, new piers and a campfire site have been built in Mellonlahti.

New piers have been installed in Mellonlahti during the spring and early summer, and a new campfire site has been built.

The renovations are part of Mellonlahti's purposeful development. Developing Vuoksi for tourism and recreation is part of Imatra's strategy.

— You can go to Mellonlahti to spend a summer day and enjoy the sun. It shines on the recreation area all day long, city gardener Erika Luhtanen advise.

The water quality has clearly improved

A large part of Mellonlahti's development work is a water pump, which was installed in the bay a year ago in July.

The goal of the pump is to improve the water quality of the bay. The work has started well: according to the samples taken in March, the oxygen concentration was 9 mg/liter in spring and winter. The sample was taken at a depth of 12 meters.

— Last winter at the same time a sample taken from the same place reported an oxygen concentration of 1,5 mg/liter. So the improvement is considerable, fishing master Tomi Menna says.

Almost all fish species can survive in water when the oxygen content is at least 7 mg per liter.

— In practice, this means that the entire Mellonlahti water mass is suitable for fish.

Other measurement results have also shown that pumping has improved water quality.

However, the work is only at the beginning, Menna states.

— Pumping must continue for a long time. The amount can perhaps be reduced over a period of time. The water area is still closed and nothing else in the environment has changed, i.e. if pumping is stopped the water quality gets worse quickly restored.
