The rapids will also be lit up in Ukrainian colors next week.

The city of Imatra will show its sympathy by raising the Ukrainian flag on the flagpole of the promenade on next Friday (9th of December). The flag will fly on the promenade during Christmas, i.e. until Epiphany.

- The Christmas peace is a particularly poignant thing this year, when there is a war going on in Europe. By flying the flag, we show solidarity with Ukraine and hope for peace, mayor Matias Hilden says.

Along with flagging, the city of Imatra will show its solidarity with Ukraine by lighting the rapids in shades of blue and yellow for a week.

- We promised the lighting back in August. The lights in the pond have now been repaired and the lighting will take place from next Monday. The pond will be lit in Ukrainian colours for a week during the dark period, director of comminications Liisa Hupli-Oinonen says.

During this week, the rapids are lit up in blue and white colors to celebrate Finland's independence.

Even before this, the city has supported Ukraine by illuminating the rapids with blue-yellow lights right after the war broke out, playing the Ukrainian national anthem for a month at the rapids shows, assisting and painting a community art carpet in the colors of Ukraine in the center.
