Imatra responds to the appeal of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and darkens the lights of the town hall and the big Christmas tree in its yard on Wednesday 21.12 December. at 19 pm for five minutes.

- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has appealed that different countries show sympathy and solidarity towards Ukraine during the short-lived dark moment. The war-torn country is preparing for the Christmas season as the energy shortage cools down the houses. The moment of darkness in Finland, Lights for Ukraine, will be celebrated from the embassy's presentation at 19 p.m., Imatra City Liaison Director Tea Laitimo says.

The city of Imatra also encourages individuals and companies to participate in the compassion campaign by turning off the lights for a short time at seven in the evening. At the same time, you can test the functionality of your own home in case of possible winter power outages.

Aid shipment after the epiphany

The city of Imatra supports Ukraine during the difficult winter in other ways as well. At the beginning of January, an aid transport will leave for the new cooperation city to Nizhyn. The aid shipment will include heaters and backup power sources, of which there is now a severe shortage in Ukraine.

- If the people of Imatra and why not the knitters from neighboring municipalities also want to help, we will accept new wool socks and mittens of different sizes for delivery to Nizhyn. Pairs of socks can be delivered to the customer service of the city of Imatra on 5.1. until, Laitimo says.

Even before this, the city has supported Ukraine by illuminating the rapids with blue-yellow lights right after the war broke out and last week, by playing the Ukrainian national anthem for a month at the rapids shows, by providing financial assistance and by painting a community art mat in the colors of Ukraine in the center.

Currently, the Ukrainian flag also flies on the flagpole in the center.
