Imatra is participating in Yle's Million Trash Bags campaign this year as well
Imatra participates in Yle's Miljoona trash bag campaign in April-June. The campaign will be organized for the second time this spring.
- Imatra was also involved in the campaign in 2023. At that time, 901 garbage bags from Imatra were marked on Yle's counter, so why not score better this spring, enthuses the city gardener Erika Luhtanen from the city of Imatra.
During the million trash bags campaign, trash that has ended up in nature is collected, for example, from your own residential area or from other surroundings, and in this way the cleanliness of the city is promoted in the run-up to summer. You do not need to register for the campaign separately.
Pick up the trash on your route and mark it in the trash counter
Collected garbage bags are marked on the garbage counter on Yle's website for your municipality.
- Municipalities and cities compete with each other for the number of garbage bags collected. That is, the more you collect and mark on the counter, the better Imatra succeeds in the playful and good-seeking competition, reminds Luhtanen.
You can participate in the campaign alone or in a group. Last year, several resident associations and sports clubs from Imatra participated in the campaign.
The city distributes garbage bags and gloves
The city of Imatra encourages the citizens to participate in the Million Trash Bags campaign by borrowing trash tongs and distributing trash bags and gloves from the customer service of the city hall and libraries during their service hours.
Garbage bags can be left in centralized places in different parts of the city. The destinations appear on the map and are marked with "Garbage here" signs.
Talks related to the campaign are requested to be reported to the city hall's customer service in advance. Larger quantities of garbage are also reported to customer service.
- If necessary, larger amounts of garbage are picked up from a separately agreed place, says Luhtanen.

Safety instructions for collectors
- Look carefully and always consider what you pick up.
- Pay attention to traffic and other people. Dress colorfully and visibly.
- The funnest and safest is to collect in pairs.
- Beware of sharp objects, broken glass, spikes or syringes. If you collect them, put them in an empty bottle or canister and close the cap. Never put them in a plastic bag with other garbage. Stinging and cutting debris in a plastic bag can injure you or the waste handlers.
- Separately collect hazardous waste: (batteries, paint cans, oily waste, medicines, chemicals). Also during the campaign, they must be collected separately and taken to Hyödyksi stations, the Kukkuroinmäki processing center or to rotating collections.
- Carefully close the mouth of bags and garbage bags. Open bags attract scavengers and the garbage is spread back into the environment.
