Partial evacuations are not ruled out if new information comes out about the situation.

The investigation report of Linnala school's water damage caused by last week's heavy rain and the repair plans for the facilities have been completed. The school had an inspection related to the repair today, Wednesday morning.

Moisture control Hirvi Oy based on the investigation report, the damage occurred because the property's downspouts were unable to temporarily receive a large amount of rain. Water poured from the downpipe onto the walls. One part of the reason for this could be vandalism, as paper pulp was found in the downpipe.

Immediately after the accident, it was announced that the problem extended to the kitchen and class 211. More detailed investigations revealed that water had also flowed into classes 130, 208 and the principal's room.

The repair of the premises will begin immediately. The preparations already started on Wednesday. Rakennus Orava Oy will start the renovation next week at the latest.

The repair requires the removal of wet wall tiles, milling and mechanical drying. Moisture measurements and limits are refined during the work. If more problems are revealed, they will be reported to the city immediately.

During the renovation, the premises will be protected

During the repair, the premises are protected in accordance with the regulations by isolating and pressurizing. Efforts are made to handle loud work outside of school hours.

Mitra is responsible for the repair plan and its implementation in cooperation with occupational safety and environmental authorities.

─ I see no obstacles to making the school usable with these measures. Microbes from this damage have not entered the room air, because it has only been a short time since the damage. What is essential now is quick reaction, building health specialist Olli Inkinen Raklamit Oy says

All options still open

The second floor of the school is also undergoing sealing work during the fall. At the same time, old floor materials are replaced with new ones. The need for these works was revealed in last summer's fitness tests.

─ We will also do new moisture measurements on the second outer wall as a check. In addition, we will carry out the previously promised symptom survey in the autumn, facilities management and security manager Sami Turunen promise

If new damage is revealed during the near-term repairs and the additional measurements mentioned above, Linnala's situation will be reassessed on a quick schedule. The city is ready to react with, for example, partial evacuation facilities.

The number of people with symptoms is also closely monitored. Parents of children with acute symptoms have the option to apply for a transfer to another school. These children have the right to return to their own class later. The number of transfers applied for with a medical certificate is one measure in the school's assessment of the situation. The instructions for making a transfer application have been sent to the guardians via Wilma today.

─ No option is excluded. We understand the plight of parents, Turunen says.

If you suspect that you are suffering from an indoor air problem in the city premises

  • Contact the school health nurse (students and guardians), occupational health (staff). The indoor air working group receives official numbers of people with symptoms and problem rooms only through this.
  • If the symptoms do not improve after the corrective measures taken, contact the health nurse/occupational health again.
  • If the parent feels that the child cannot study / be treated in a certain space due to the air quality, they can apply for a transfer with a medical certificate. The city is quickly ready for transfers of individual students.
