The goal is to create a sustainable, compact and comfortable urban environment.

The total length of Imatra's walking and cycling network is currently 146 kilometers.

In its improvement and planning, special attention is paid to safety and the different needs of users, and to the fact that walking and cycling are linked with public transport in a smooth travel chain.

What practical measures are coming?

- A 5-year action program for the promotion of walking and cycling has been presented in the Walking and Cycling Promotion Program to be submitted to the Urban Development Board for approval. The procedure list includes e.g. Improving cycling and walking conditions on Joutsenonkatu and clarifying traffic arrangements, adding high-quality bicycle parking spaces and developing guidance, says the traffic engineer Aino Vuopio.

- Primarily, it is a strategic tool for promoting sustainable mobility. The procedure program only gives the first steps. The most important content of the work is the goals and guidelines, towards which work must be done throughout the organization and together with stakeholders, Vuopio continues.
