The aftercare of the landfill, which was closed in 2001, is the responsibility of the city.

Landfill gases are collected through eight collection wells. The torch burning had to be stopped on November 7.11.2019, XNUMX due to torch damage.

— During this time, when the torch has not been in operation, the gas has only passed through the combustion plant, says the developer Henry Tapiola Mitra from Imatra Rakennuttaja Oy.

The prerequisites for the continuation of gas burning were investigated and alternatives were sought to replace gas burning with some other technology. The methane gas generated from the landfill is so impure that it cannot be used elsewhere.

— According to the prepared consulting report, gas incineration is still the most viable option for processing the gas generated at the landfill, says Kari Pietarinen From the water of Imatra.

The gas quantities are relatively small and there is no continuous supply of gas, so the burner works in stages. With this technology, methane gas is converted into carbon dioxide, which has a significantly lower climate-warming effect than methane.
— According to the studies, it has been estimated that the generation of gases from the closed landfill in Kurkisuo will decrease in the next ten years to such an extent that there would be no need to burn them after that. But that will clear up with time, says Tapiola.
— The new torch is now up and ready for use, and the automation of the gas combustion plant will be completed by the end of May, he continues.

The costs of the project are around €150.000.

The Kurkisuo landfill was closed at the end of 2001. The landfill area was landscaped
and covered during 2002 and 2003. The landfill gas collection system and the leachate purification plant were completed in 2004.

In the years 2011–2015, the gas collected from the landfill was used for electricity and heat production with the microturbine and boiler plant of the fish farm Kuhina Oy located next door. Due to the bankruptcy of the company, the collected gas has since been burned in a landfill on the edge of the area
in the located torch burner.
