Pits are currently being dug for the pedestals of the nine works.

The idea of Veistosvirta, which has been brewing for years, is finally starting to become a reality along Vuoksi. Wednesday 14.10. an excavator dug pits near the town hall for the stands of the first works.

The sculpture stream refers to a chain of sculptures that starts after the old railway bridge and continues past the town hall and Culture Center Virra in Vuoksi beach park.

─ The old idea has been that one day there would be sculptures all the way to Imatrankoski. For that purpose, the Tukinuittajat statue was already moved to the bank of Kaupunkipuro from the parking lot of the town hall. Now the beginning of the sculpture trail is being implemented. The continuation depends on how the city will acquire or place works in the future, city gardener Erika Luhtanen says.

The legacy of the Stone Symposium

The works at the head of the Veistosvirta stream are intended to be placed a fairly short distance away, within sight of each other, because these nine works have a common story.

They were all made at the international stone symposiums organized in Imatra, where the artists of the field worked on sculptures every year.

The course was organized by Saimaa University of Applied Sciences. Every year, the city received two works for itself in exchange for supporting the course.

The future wilderness and nature culture museum has been taken into account in the placement of the stone sculptures. Only statue number six (attachment map) is located on the grounds of the town hall, the others in the park area.

In place in November

The intention is that the heavy stone works will be moved to their places by the end of November, provided the weather does not bring any surprises.

Next, the sensors are cast. Kipa cooperates with Lappeenranta's Timantti- ja Piikkaus Oy, the work manager of Imatra's Real Estate and Area Service (Kipa) Kimmo Kauhanen says.

Next year, the works will receive guide boards that tell about them and about Veistosvirta.
