Recovering waste heat from the ice rink

Release
27.4.2021 18:04
Equipment installations in May.

In the future, the Imatra ice rink will be heated with its own waste heat.

─Making ice takes a lot of electrical energy. Until now, it has remained unused, only the magpies of Ukonniemi have benefited from the heat. In the future, it will be recovered and returned to the ice rink's heat cycle, Mitra's CEO Lassi Nurmi says.

If the recovery equipment works as planned, in the future only during the coldest winter months will we have to rely on external heat sources for heating the ice rink.

Espit Oy won the tender

Mitra has cooperated with LUT University in recovering the heat from the cooling system.

Now the device installation of the heat extraction system has been tendered and the contract was won by Espit Oy. The price of the investment is around 74 euros. Three companies participated in the competition.

─ The payback period for the investment is two years, Nurmi states.

The equipment installations will be carried out in May.

─In the future, the project is to be expanded. If a sports hall is coming next door, during the summer the excess heat from the ice rink can be used to heat the sports hall.
