Behave responsibly in quarantine

Quarantine prescribed by an infectious disease doctor is an official decision. The decision is based on evidence or a reasonable suspicion that the person has been exposed to the disease. Quarantine prescribed by a doctor cannot be shortened with coronavirus tests, such as self-imposed quarantine following travel. Quarantine prescribed by an infectious disease doctor is not a recommendation.

In both self-imposed quarantine and official quarantine, you must act responsibly.
While in quarantine, close contact with people outside the family must be avoided. Going out is allowed, as long as you don't go near other people. You MUST NOT go to work, school, day care, hobbies or the store. The dog can be walked outside, but close contact with people is not allowed.

Quarantine is most often carried out at home. If people over 70 years old or people with basic illnesses live in the home, special arrangements can be considered.

Will other family members be quarantined?

The immediate family of the quarantined person is not quarantined, as they are not in close contact with the infected person. The close circle of a quarantined asymptomatic person is not contagious.

There is a delay between getting infected and the patient being able to infect others. Because of this, the relatives of an exposed asymptomatic person should not limit their lives. If the exposed person starts showing symptoms, it will be investigated whether it is the coronavirus.

If a quarantined person starts showing symptoms, it is recommended that his family members remain in self-imposed quarantine until the corona test result is completed. If the test result is positive, the official quarantine will be extended to the next of kin as necessary. If the test is negative, the family members can continue their normal lives.

Quarantine or isolation?

Quarantine means restricting the freedom of movement of a healthy person. The coronavirus is already contagious a few days before the symptoms start, and quarantine prevents infections from a possible asymptomatic carrier to other people.

According to the Infectious Diseases Act (1227/2016), the doctor responsible for infectious diseases of the municipality or hospital district can order isolation or quarantine of a person who has fallen ill or is reasonably suspected of having fallen ill with a universally dangerous infectious disease or an infectious disease that is justifiably suspected of being universally dangerous. In such a situation, the person is entitled to infectious disease allowance.

Isolation means that a person with an infectious disease is isolated from healthy people. This is to avoid possible further infections. Isolation can be done at home or in a hospital.
