Imatra begins to investigate the construction of a wooden sports hall in connection with the ice rink in Ukonniemi.

The matter of the sports hall has been investigated for several years. It has now turned out that renovating a sports hall costs the same as building a new one. The matter is no longer progressing smoothly. The decision on construction will be made by the council in due course, after the report has been received, by the city manager Kai Roslakka presented to the city council that met on Monday.

In the first phase of the budget hearing on Monday, the city government approved the initiation of a comprehensive survey for the construction of a wooden sports hall in Ukonniemi.

The Ministry of the Environment gave the momentum to start the planning report wood construction program, through which municipalities can apply for grants for projects promoting the use of wood in public construction. Imatran Toimitilat Oy has submitted a grant application to the ministry for the survey project for wooden construction. The Ministry of the Environment's share of the report's eligible costs can be up to 70 percent.

The future report concerns the sports hall, not the swimming pool.

The council was informed about the initiation of the wood construction study at an event organized after Monday's meeting of the city board. The first reading of the budget continues tomorrow, Tuesday the 8th.
