Imatra's goal is carbon neutrality by 2030

Release
14.7.2020 14:18
In order to achieve the goal, the city of Imatra will implement the Climate Wise project in 2020 – 2021.

The city of Imatra has been carrying out targeted climate work since 2007. Greenhouse emissions have decreased by almost a third since that time.

Imatra's Ilmostovisaat project will instill a new one climate program 2020–2030 part of the city group's operations.

The goal of the project is to communicate climate change to the municipalities and change the behavior of the residents of South Karelia to be more climate-friendly. Climate work is wanted as part of everyday activities, and at the same time, models are created that work in other municipalities as well.

Ilmatovisiaat project puller Eetu Ahlberg considers it important that the city commits to the climate program widely in order to achieve the city's ambitious climate goal.

- We invite the people of Imatra to discuss how to reach these goals in early autumn. At this stage, there are plans to form five action groups consisting of active city residents, each of whom promotes climate goals, especially in their own sector, says Ahlberg.

The themes of the action groups are:

1. Renewable energy and energy efficiency

2. Public transport and new modes of transport

3. Decision-making processes that integrate climate perspectives

4. Consumption and material choices

5. Preparing for climate change

The project also promotes the use of climate-friendly district heating together with Imatran Lämpö Oy.

In the project, the city of Lappeenranta prepares and implements events for residents and businesses, as well as a climate tour in the municipalities of South Karelia. Residents and businesses are encouraged to do climate action, first of all in low-emission traffic and district heating.

Ahlberg hopes that the climate project will interest the townspeople.

- Those interested in the Ilmostovisaat project and the climate work of the city of Imatra can contact us at any time. There is a special time for discussion and questions On Imatra day 5.9. In the center of Imatra, Ahlberg advises.
