"The new international Imatra–Svetogorsk rail connection would significantly improve the competitiveness of the export industry in Eastern and Southeastern Finland."

The city of Imatra left the Minister of Transport and Communications To Timo Haraka petition for the internationalization of the Imatra railway border.

The new international Imatra–Svetogorsk rail connection would significantly improve Eastern and Southeastern Finland competitiveness of the export industry. Transport distances will be shortened by up to 200 kilometers in one direction and the circulation of empty wagons will speed up, the mayor Kai Roslakka told the ministerial meeting.

The internationalization of the railway border would not only improve the opportunities of the export industry, but also enable passenger transport. At that time, completely new opportunities opened up for the tourism industry in South Karelia..

Roslakka also reminded that the internationalization of the railway border would be a significant improvement in terms of the climate.

It is extremely important that these are done in cooperation with business. I believe that commitment can be found here on both sides, Harakka stated when receiving the petition.

Minister Timo Harakka visited Imatra as a guest of the South Karelia Federation and the city on Saturday 29.8 August.
