The work communities chose the awardees from among themselves. At Vuoksenniska school, retiring assistant principal Leila Riihinen was named an everyday hero.

Last week, the city of Imatra awarded the everyday heroes of the schools.

In the Koski school center, the award was presented to the home economics lecturer Berjut Nuotio. At the Mansikkala school center, the award went to a music lecturer Hanna Saarela and a study guide at Imatra's co-ed high school Ilkka Mielonen. At Vuoksenniska school, the assistant principal was awarded Leila Riihinen.

The Everyday Hero award is given to an employee who is selfless and creates a positive atmosphere. The awardees are chosen by the work community.

—In this way, we remember those everyday heroes who, with their own contribution and essence, bring joy and goodness to everyone's working days, head of education and youth Minna Rovio says.

Leila Riihine is retiring during the summer vacation

Assistant principal Leila Riihinen, who was awarded as an everyday hero at Vuoksenniska school, is spending her last full day of work today - retirement is ahead.

Riihinen started her career at Imatra as a kindergarten teacher in 1979.

—After that I studied to become a special education teacher, and I started as a special education teacher in 1991, Riihinen says.

Later in his career, Riihine also worked as assistant principal of Vuoksenniska school and for the last five years as assistant principal

He has enjoyed himself in the school world. Meetings with students and colleagues have been particularly rewarding.

Work has been a big part of everyday life.

—Now life is changing. I feel wistful, even a little sad. I've had a great time at my job right up to the end, but maybe now is the right time to stop. That's what they say, that you should leave the party while it's still fun.

At first, Riihinen plans to spend the summer vacation. In autumn, there is time to think more about what the new everyday life will be like.

—Maybe I'll start doing volunteer work. At the moment, I'm also thinking that from time to time I could come and substitute a special education teacher as well.

Good luck to all everyday heroes, and happy retirement to Leila!
