The mural was designed by Hanna Kettunen, who studies visual arts at LAB University of Applied Sciences.

The mural competition carried out by the developer Mitra Imatra and the LAB University of Applied Sciences' Institute of Fine Arts in collaboration has been decided. The competition was won by a fine arts student Hanna Kettunen with his proposal "Ulpukat".

In the competition, a large-scale mural was applied for the Mitra office building located on Kukkolinnankatu in Imatra. It is hoped that the mural, which will be placed in a prominent location, will improve the appearance of the area and attract attention to the building, which is important for Mitra's business.

The winning work will be painted on the side of the building during the coming spring.

- The exact schedule will become clear later, CEO of Mitra Lassi Nurmi says.

The work was chosen from the students' works

The work to be realized was chosen from several suggestions made by LAB visual arts students.

The students made sketches of the lecturer William Dennis too by pulling the course.

-From these proposals, Mitra chose three finalists that advanced to further development. In addition to the winning work, they were chosen for the next stage Kristina Kajasteen ja Mari Koskelan "Camouflage" as well Venla Uotilan "Robots", lecturer of visual arts at LAB Ville Huhtanen says.

The winning work was chosen by a jury, which included representatives from Mitra, the city of Imatra and the Imatra Architects Office.

- The proposals were good and varied and the choice was difficult. Many thanks to everyone who participated, says Nurmi.

The total budget of the mural to be realized is €19000. The mural is implemented as part of the facade renovation project and its customer is Mitra Management Oy. The work is carried out in cooperation between LAB University of Applied Sciences and Saimaa Vocational College Sampo.

The building located along Kukonlinnankatu is protected, so the implementation of the mural requires approval from the city's building control and the regional responsibility museum. The building control is in favor of the project, but before the final approval, the position of the museum must also be heard.

Cooperation with LAB is important to Imatra

Lassi Nurmi is happy that the cooperation with LAB students has continued despite the fact that the university of applied sciences no longer operates in Imatra.

He hopes that an operating model like the mural project would result in a permanent form of cooperation.

- Next year we could choose yet another destination. Cooperation with LAB is really important to us, says Nurmi.

LAB's visual arts students are also visible in Imatra. The thesis exhibition d : A x A → R of graduating fine art students is currently underway at the Imatra Art Museum. For the time being, the art museum is closed due to corona restrictions.
