The train connection to the airport enables the returnee's work trips abroad
You can create an international career from Imatra too, says the Imatra resident Henni Suvanto.
He works at Stora Enso on sustainable development. His home base is in Imatra, but his area of responsibility is international.
Suvanto keeps in touch with his team using remote connections. A working internet connection is very important for work.
—When the fiber optic opportunity came, it didn't take long to think about whether to go with it, because I believe that remote and hybrid jobs are here to stay, says Suvanto.
Despite the remote connections, the work also requires traveling from time to time. Suvanto usually goes on trips by train.
—I haven't found business trips abroad to be difficult either, because you can easily get to the airport directly from here by train. Traveling by train is the best option from an environmental point of view, and you can also work there in peace. The preservation of the morning train is important in this sense, says Suvanto.
If something could be improved, Suvanto would like better local transport connections to the train station.
— I would gladly go to the station by public transport when I am on a trip for several days. However, it doesn't always work out.
Imatra is now home
But even if getting to the station is not always smooth, it is a small minus. In Imatra, the distances are relatively short and it takes much less time to move from one place to another than in the former place of residence.
The younger child's daycare center is nearby and the older one's journey to school is not long either — the first-grader can easily travel the 3-kilometer school trip by bus independently, says Suvanto.
The extra time released from short trips is spent with children and doing hobbies. The hobby opportunities are really good for both children and adults, Suvanto states.
—We actively use the services of Virta College and the swimming pool, and we are also familiar with other sports and outdoor places. Regarding the outdoor spaces, it is necessary to say as a separate thank you how great the activity of private people is. It's great that people use their own free time and make, for example, frisbee golf courses or forest trails with their own hands.
Over the course of three years, Imatra has clearly become a home for Suvanno again. The family has come here to stay, although sometimes they also think about moving abroad.
—If we were to move away from Finland for a while, the home would still be here.

What does the future of Imatra look like?
Living in Imatra is like a birdhouse, says Suvanto. At the edge there is beautiful nature and clean water, peace.
Next door, however, is Russia, whose actions are worrying.
—The only surprising thing about the change and Imatra has been Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and how they are seen on this side of the border. Suvanto thinks about how Kaakonkulma is faring in general in this economic situation.
We should not rest on our laurels, but increasing the vitality of Imatra and the entire region requires work.
—In my opinion, education is a vital condition for the vitality of cities. When I lived in Imatra before, there was a college here. School leaving can be seen and felt. Something compensatory should be recovered.
