You should avoid swimming, especially if there is a lot of blue-green algae. Even a small amount can cause symptoms in sensitive people.

Blue-green algae has been observed in the water bodies of the Imatra region on Monday 19.6 June.

In Ruokolahti, a lot of blue-green algae has been observed at Vaittila's beach. Small amounts of blue-green algae have also been observed in Ruokolahti at Hann'ahonniemi, Pappilanlahti and Rasila beaches, and in Imatra at Immalanliette beach.

Avoid swimming during periods of high cyanobacteria. Even a small amount can cause symptoms in sensitive people. If you swim, take a shower after swimming. Keep children out of the water during periods of high cyanobacteria concentrations, as mouthing water containing cyanobacteria can be dangerous.

Cyanobacteria can produce toxic or irritating substances in water. More than half of the cyanobacteria are toxic. The sensitivity of people to getting symptoms from cyanobacteria varies a lot.

— Water containing cyanobacteria can cause allergic skin symptoms, stomach problems, runny nose, or general symptoms such as fever and headache to swimmers, environmental engineer Marcella Suomalainen It tells about the environmental activities of the Imatra region.

The situation can change very quickly

The amount of blue-green algae varies very quickly, e.g. due to wind direction or rain. Since there is no constant supervision on the beaches, every swimmer should always check the quality of the swimming water before going for a swim. Adults should monitor where children swim and prevent children from swimming in water containing blue-green algae.

Blue-green algae identification instructions can be seen at every public beach in the Imatra region.
