The goal of the Waste Act is to prevent the generation of waste. The generated waste must be sorted at its place of origin and delivered for utilization and recycled whenever possible. The waste is delivered primarily as raw material, secondarily to energy production and finally to a landfill. The waste must not cause danger or harm to people, nature or the environment.
Matters related to the control of waste management in the area of Imatra, Parikkala, Rautjärvi and Ruokolahti are handled by the environmental department of the Imatra region. Supervisory matters include e.g. unauthorized export of waste to the environment, i.e. littering. Littering means leaving or abandoning all kinds of waste in the environment, including in yards. According to the law, the litterer is obliged to clean up the waste he has left, or the cleaning can be done at the litterer's expense.
Etelä-Karjalan Jätehuolto Oy is responsible for the practical organization of waste management in the South Karelia region. On their website, you can find sorting instructions for all waste fractions, useful waste reception points with opening hours, hazardous waste reception points, etc. The website also has general information about waste management and current issues and events.
The waste management authority of South Karelia decides on waste tariffs and waste management regulations. The waste management authority handles deviations from the waste management regulations, e.g. emptying intervals.
