Release
22.9.2023 07:24
The soil cleaning work at Sahanranta has been completed and the contract was received in September. The post-inspection of the final finishing of the area will be held at the end of October. The vegetation and plantings will be inspected next spring.

Sahanranta's soil cleaning work has been completed on schedule. In the contract, a total of approximately 16 tons of soil classified as contaminated was removed from the area, which was slightly less than planned (500 tons). In addition, in connection with the cleaning work, approximately 18 tons of construction and brick waste were removed from the soil and sorted among the contaminated soil materials, and almost 600 cubic meters of concrete structures were demolished.

- The cleaning work was carried out as planned and the objectives of the cleaning work were met. The environmental and health risks caused by the old sawmill area have now been removed, says the project manager Olli Kolari From Ramboll Finland Oy.

The cleaning work will be reported in its entirety in the final report, which will be completed in November. Groundwater monitoring was also carried out during the cleanup work, which will continue as its own project in the spring of 2024. At that time, a groundwater monitoring program and further plans will be drawn up. The contract area has been landscaped according to the landscaping plan, and the maintenance of the area will be transferred to the municipality of Parikkala in November.

The contract was completed at approximately the planned costs, although the costs increased somewhat, especially as the amount of construction, concrete and brick waste excavated and processed from the soil increased more than planned.

The cleaning work was carried out by the municipality of Parikkala and Pirkanmaa's ELY center as a state waste management work. The site was chosen on a risk basis to be included in the national Soil condition program coordinated by the Pirkanmaa ELY Center.

After the cleaning work, it is hoped that the area will be used for recreation, and it is located in a very beautiful location on the shore of Lake Simpelijärvi. All Parikkala residents are welcome to enjoy themselves in the area as before.
