Construction work is now being done in Meltola in the entire area of the treatment plant. The corona pandemic and the war in Ukraine are increasing costs.

The renovation of the Meltola wastewater treatment plant is progressing in Imatra.

During the winter, the renovation of the treatment plant has focused mainly on the construction of a new aftertreatment plant.

—Construction of a post-treatment plant improves the level of water purification. In the past, there was no post-treatment at the wastewater treatment plant, Imatra Vede's water supply manager Kari Pietarinen says.

In recent weeks, the renovation work has expanded to the entire area of the wastewater treatment plant.

—A temporary wastewater bypass system for the pre-treatment building is being built on the construction site, which enables the necessary repairs to be carried out inside the building. It is a challenging whole, because the flow of water cannot be interrupted at any stage of the construction, developer Pasi Huoponen Mitra tells about Imatra's Rakennuttaja.

The global situation raises costs

The renovation has progressed almost as planned, but there have also been bumps along the way.

The estimated completion schedule is about two months longer than planned. According to current information, the renovation should be completed in October 2023.

—Concrete structures were made in winter, which caused additional work. The concrete had to be heated and a lot of snow work had to be done at the construction site, Huoponen states.

In addition, delivery times for materials have been extended due to the global situation.

The costs of the renovation will also rise from the original estimate. The war in Ukraine has increased the prices of construction materials and the corona pandemic has brought an additional price to the materials.

—The final amount of cost changes is still open, Huoponen says.

The cleaning plant will be completely renovated

The renovation work of the Meltola wastewater treatment plant started in August 2021.

The purpose of the renovation is to bring the wastewater treatment plant's technology up to today's requirements.

In practice, the entire technology of the wastewater treatment plant will be renewed.

The old buildings will be renovated, and new buildings will be built at the treatment plant.

—The new buildings include a control room and social space building, a wastewater post-treatment building, a compressor and chemical building, and a garage. The old control room will be demolished, says Huoponen.

The client of the renovation is the city of Imatra. The developer is Mitra Imatra Rakennuttaja Oy.
