In the new permit, the limit values for solid matter and phosphorus remaining in purified water are tightened and a limit value is set for nitrogen.

Southeast Finland's ELY center decided that the city of Imatra should apply for a new environmental permit for the operation of the wastewater treatment plant, because the changes in its operation due to the renovation will be significant.

The valid permit is from 2007. A new 39-page application with attachments was submitted yesterday.

Imatra Vede's water supply manager Kari Pietarinen according to Imatran Vesi, the key water purification percentages in the permit are more ambitious than before.

- 95 percent of phosphorus must be removed, while currently the environmental permit requirement is 90 percent. For solids, the percentages are the same, that is, we propose tightening the cleaning level from 90 percent to 95 percent. There is currently no obligation for nitrogen. We are going to remove 85 percent of it, Pietarinen explains.

According to Pietarinen, the limit values are typical on a Finnish scale.

The application was subject to preliminary negotiations with the regional administrative authority, so the content of the application is already known to the authority granting the permit in advance.
