Those children and young people who have a place of residence in Finland are obliged to attend school.

In the future, Etelä-Karelia IB high school will charge its non-compulsory students for learning materials and equipment. Invoicing is done according to the actual learning material costs. The costs include the costs of the computer.

The change will enter into force on August 1.8.2024, XNUMX.

Compulsory education is defined in the Compulsory Education Act. According to the law, compulsory schooling includes children and young people who live permanently in Finland. The defining factor is the municipality of residence: if the student has a municipality of residence in Finland, he is legally obliged to study and thus falls under the scope of free education.

-So nationality does not determine compulsory education, headmaster Johanna Ovaska to point out.

For example, exchange students or other persons temporarily living in Finland are excluded from compulsory education. They are not entitled to free education in the future.

It is the responsibility of the education organizer to find out the students' place of residence.

The matter has been discussed in the steering group of the South Karelia IB high school with representatives of the cities of Lappeenranta and Imatra. The welfare board of the city of Imatra accepted the motion 17.4. 2024.
