The city has ordered additional work related to the further use of the Napinkulma area in the demolition contract
In the Napinkulma demolition area, work will stop during the Christmas week. The construction site is currently being filled until today before Christmas.
The concrete ramp and railings and retaining wall remaining on the city-owned side of the demolition area will be demolished in January.
— For example, it is now good to implement the sewer and water lines in connection with the demolition work, when the machines are on site. The implementation planning for the temporary use is almost ready, and based on it, a well-coordinated demolition project and future needs have been obtained, says the city engineer Erik Forstén.
What surprises have been found under the building?
The Napinkulma property had oil heating before switching to district heating. During the excavation, the old oil tank was removed, after which signs of oil were found in the ground below it.
—In the samples taken from the ground, the hydrocarbon values were above the limit values. As the contaminated soil is removed, additional samples are taken in order to find out how deep and wide the soil still needs to be removed. This, of course, increases costs and extends the completion of the work to January, says the developer Pasi Huoponen from Mitra Imatran Rakennuttaja.
Otherwise, the demolition work has progressed according to plans, including deviations in harmful substances that are typically found in the demolition of an old building.
—It is not always possible to detect all of them in the harmful substance mapping done in advance. The site, in cooperation with the customer, has managed these surprises well, says Forstén.
The general plans for the temporary use of Napinkulma have been approved by the urban development board on April 23.4.2024, XNUMX.
Work to implement the plan will start in the area in the spring of 2025.
In the plan, the area is wanted to form a space adaptable to a wide range of purposes and events, which lives and changes with the seasons. Users can be not only municipal residents and tourists spending their free time, but also entrepreneurs and event organizers, among others.
