Severe frost – check the area around the water meter!

Winter frosts can cause problems with water meters and the property's plumbing. Make sure that the temperature around the water meter remains high enough.

Remotely readable water meters cannot withstand freezing temperatures. A frozen water meter can cause water supply interruptions and damage to the property's plumbing. Currently, approximately 300 remotely readable meters have sent an alarm to Imatra Water about the temperature being too low.

Prevention is the best way to avoid damage:

  • Check the temperature regularly near the water meter.
  • if the temperature drops to +4 °C or below, the risk of freezing increases

Additional heat sources are recommended for the water meter room during severe frosts (e.g. a fan heater or other safe heating device).

— If the meter breaks due to freezing, it will be replaced with a new one, but the replacement costs will fall on the property owner, reminds the network manager. Kari Mäkelä from Imatran Vesi.

The risk of freezing of water pipes in properties increases during prolonged periods of frost, so monitor the situation and take action in time. Imatra Water does not recommend running water to prevent freezing, as it can, in the worst case, cause blockages in drains, for example.

— If the pipes are already frozen, it is worth using a professional to thaw them. The wrong thawing method can cause additional damage, Mäkelä recommends.
