Climate actions and know-how in South Karelia

The goals of the project are to commit municipalities to climate work, to introduce climate-friendly choices into municipal operations and decision-making by strengthening actors' (officials, residents, decision-makers, third sector) information related to climate work, opportunities for action and climate management, to help municipalities and groups of actors to apply for projects that enhance climate work.

As measures in the project, training on different themes, webinars and climate fairs are organized. In order to find the most effective and feasible climate measures, industry-specific greenhouse gas emission calculations are made for municipalities. At the same time, the benefits, savings and competitive advantages of climate work are examined.

A functioning information flow is ensured by gathering representatives of the municipalities and other parties relevant to the project into an active climate working group, with which the project staff cooperates closely. Information is also transmitted through provincial and regional working groups. The project makes extensive use of regional and national experiences and success stories, as well as existing counters, climate programs and strategies, and other materials.

The project is implemented by the experts of the Southern Karelia Association, Imatra and Lappeenranta. The main target group is the small municipalities of South Karelia; Ruokolahti, Rautjärvi, Parikkala, Lemi, Luumäki, Savitaipale and Taipalsaari. Imatra and Lappeenranta, as experienced implementers of climate work, act as part implementers in this project.

Costs

The total cost estimate of the project for the duration of the project is €119531, of which the city of Imatra's share is €26. The project is financed by a grant from the Ministry of the Environment's climate solutions for municipalities program 000-2018 regions in support of municipalities' climate work. Imatra's self-financing share (€2023) is financed by the Lappeenranta-Imatra urban regional work committee.
