A species survey is carried out so that the rock cuts can be cleaned of the organic matter in them.

126 pieces of Kruununpuisto rock carvings have been located, some of which were made at the end of the 1800th century, some at the beginning of the 1900th century and the last ones around the 1970s. Over time, vegetation has grown on top of the cuttings. During the summer, a student Ahti Pulli Environmental consulting from Niemeläinen Oy finds out what vegetation is in rock cuttings.

— There is mainly moss and lichen on top of the logs, but even a small sapling grows between one of the rocks, Pulli says.

A vegetation survey is carried out so that the rock cuts can be cleaned of, for example, moss, which clearly hinders visibility. A species survey is carried out before the cleaning, so that it can be estimated to what extent and in what way the cleaning can be carried out.

Next week, Pulli will return to work in Kruununpuisto. About 60% of the work is now done, so there are still some rock cuts to be explored. Pulli is an experienced nature person and knows bird species well, but moss and lichen species have previously remained strangers.

— In the past, moss and lichen species were not very familiar, but while working I have learned to know the species and at the same time the work has sped up, Pulli describes his work.

The rock cuttings will be cleaned of organic matter, as long as the species survey report has been completed.
