Investment support from the state for companies in the Imatra region

"The support area decision is a very significant change and an opportunity for the business life of the area."

The municipalities of the Imatra region rose to the EU's highest, i.e. the first, support area for years 2022-2027. The State Council issued a decree on the matter this afternoon.

Moving up to a higher support area enables the companies of Imatra, Rautjärvi, Ruokolahti and Parikkala to receive larger investment subsidies than before.

─ This is a very significant change and an opportunity for the business life of the region. We have been waiting for a decision for a long time in the entire region. Iso thanks to the country's government that the needs of the Imatra region have been heard in this matter, Acting mayor Matias Hilden says.

The South Karelia Union has been lobbying very actively to increase the support area together with the city.

In the Imatra region, investment subsidies for companies can in the future be granted with the same subsidy percentages as in Eastern Finland. However, for the time being, there is still too little money to hand out. Support area status should be taken into account in EU money distribution solutions that are still open nationally, e.gcounty director Satu Sikanen says.

Support will be granted by ELY centers in the future.

At the moment, there is little support available in our region. On the frame there is a long queue of companies waiting for support because many companies are ready to invest. It's great that we can finally help companies with applications. The decision also excellently supports our placement sales, CEO of Imatran Regional Development Company Antti Oravuo rejoices.

What support area?

With support area decisions, the state compensates for the fact that there are differences between different areas. Labor and other resources are unevenly distributed.

Support areas are defined within the criteria set by the EU. The most important criteria are population density, GDP and unemployment rate, as well as geographical features.

It is also possible to designate areas subject to serious structural change as a support area.

More on the subject in the announcement of the Ministry of Labor and the Economy.
