"This is really a significant step towards the internationalization of the border crossing point."

The Norwegian Railways Agency has announced today that the development of the Imatra border crossing is among the first railway projects to be implemented in the Transport 12 investment program. The preliminary financing plan for the changes is 46 million euros. The parliament will ultimately decide on the initiation and financing of the project.

─ The Finnish Railways Agency's policy gives a strong message about Imatra's growth opportunities in the future. This supports the start of the following investments, which include, for example, the wilderness and nature culture museum and the new development projects in the Vuoksi area, vs. the mayor Ari Lindeman says.

─ This is really a significant step towards the fact that export transports are also handled through Imatra and the border crossing becomes international for passenger traffic. Such a large investment would not be made just for the sake of goods transport, the city's liaison director, who has been involved in influencing the railway project from the beginning Tea Laitimo rejoices.

To build in 2024?

Access to the Liikenne 12 investment program means that after the parliament's blessing, the construction plans will be started to renew the line between Karjalanrada and the national border.

In the conversion works, the rail gap in question is to be electrified and at the same time the goods yard will be moved from Imatrankoski to Pelkola. In addition, we are preparing for passenger traffic in Imatrankoski. In practice, this means building a spur track to Imatrankoski and making a new passenger platform in connection with it.

In addition, the investment program includes the construction of a triangular track near Kuutosti.

The construction phase of the investment could start at the beginning of 2024 at the earliest.

The Transport 12 investment program is published on the Finnish Railways Agency's website.
