Imatra asked the townspeople for name suggestions in the fall.

Imatra is getting its own Ahonlaita.

Last October, the city of Imatra opened a name competition. With it, townspeople were asked for name suggestions for the street that runs through the old Ahopello garden area.

─ We got a lot of answers. They came from a total of 76 respondents and as many as 66 different name options. This really got me thinking, planning engineer Timo Könönen says.

The city's zoning chose Ahonlaida as the most suitable for the area, which was suggested in the survey by and Sami Pietiäinen that Pekka Sarkanen.

─ The name of the road next to it is Pellonreuna, Ahonlaita fits it and is a funny name, Pietiäinen justified his proposal.

─ Ahonlaita fits the old nomenclature of the area well. A new street must always be named according to the site plan. It must adapt to the old nomenclature of the area or otherwise be characteristic of the area due to history or some other factor, Könönen explains the choice.

In the name proposals, there were several statements in favor of Ahopellonkatu, -raiti and Puutarhakatu. However, there are already streets with this name in the area.

Pietiäinen and Sarkanen receive small Product Awards for their Ahonlaita idea.

Why a new street?

The future double-track track connection to Pelkola requires the construction of a new underpass to Linnankoski. The underpass does not fit in the place of the current level crossing, which is why the underpass has to be moved closer to Mehiläimäki.

As a result, the new underpass also requires a new street connection from Vuoksentie to Sotkulammentie.

The street will be built through the area of the old Ahopello garden. The city has bought the land in question.

Sketches for viewing

The new track plan of the Finnish Railways Agency from the national border to Sienimäki requires changes to the site plan and the environment more broadly. In addition to the Linnankoski level crossing, the biggest changes also concern the Imatrankoski station and the triangular track between Kartanonkatu and Kuutosti.

All of these site plan change drafts will be made publicly available on the city's website and in the lower lobby of the city hall next Monday, January 24.1.

On the basis of the statements and feedback received from the drafts, site plan proposals are drawn up, and the urban development board decides whether to display them. After the proposals are visible, if necessary, small changes will be made to the formulas before the city board's consideration. The site plans are finally approved by the city council.

There is no information yet on the construction schedule of the new underpass and road connection. It may still require time, as the double track is included in the second phase of the rail project, which has not yet received funding.

The plot of the old garden, completely unchanged, still does not wait for decisions. The demolition of the old buildings on the plot will start already this year.
