Sort your waste at Christmas too.

Waste management at Christmas time

A lot of waste is generated during Christmas and New Year. The best waste management is unborn waste, and purchasing decisions have a great impact on the amount of waste.

Prefer non-material gifts, give tickets to movies, concerts or museums (we hope Corona makes it easier). Bake wonderful treats, make sweets or other gifts yourself.

Avoid food waste and recycle goods and packaging and sort waste in the right places.

Candles, wrapping paper, cards

Candlesticks and lwooden and plastic candle jars and twinkle cups belong to dry waste, as do plastic and glass grave candles. Gift wrap, ribbons and cards also belong in dry waste, not in the paper collection container. Metallic tinsel cups belong to the metal collection.

Ham fat

If you don't want to use ham fat or other fats, drain the fat into a milk can, close the cap or tape the can and put it in the dry waste. The coagulated fat can be put as it is in organic waste or in a composter. Do not pour fat into the toilet bowl or drain, it clogs the pipes!

You can also do the Ham Trick and donate the frying fat of ham, turkey, fish or root chips as raw material for biodiesel. In Imatra, they are accepted by K-Citymarket Mansikkala, K-Market in Karhumäki, K-Supermarket Vuoksenniska and Neste K Imatra Korvenkanta (usually in the yard area) and Haraka's tälleksä station, Harakankuja 1.  Ham trick

The tins

You should save the New Year's tins and melt them again in the next phase of the year. Unnecessary New Year's tins should be delivered to a hazardous waste reception location, such as the Kukkuroinmäki processing center or Hyödyksi stations. An ecological alternative is to melt ordinary table sugar instead of tin or use beeswax.

Fireworks

Unexploded fireworks are returned to sellers or the police. The debris from the fired rockets is put in dry waste after cooling.

Christmas trees

In the housing association, the Christmas tree can be placed in the immediate vicinity of the waste shed, in plain sight, waiting for removal. You can also order pick-up of fir trees from e.g. Etelä-Karelia waste management for single-family houses, they are not automatically taken away when emptying the waste container.
