The goal of the province of South Karelia is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2030. In order to reach this ambitious goal, emission reductions must be made in all sectors, and success requires the cooperation of the city, residents and companies in the area.

In order to speed up regional business cooperation in South Karelia, the companies' Climate Partnership project will be launched in 2021. Imatra is also involved in the project.

The goal of the project is to introduce a climate partner model between companies and municipalities in the whole of South Karelia. Previously, the model has been used in Lappeenranta, where the city has cooperated with companies in the Greenreality operating model.

For Imatra, the Climate Partnership is a good addition to the climate work, which has been carried out purposefully for several years.

- I see it as important that we do regional cooperation in promoting climate issues. This project is also a great example of that, Deputy Mayor of Imatra Kaisa Heino says.

The goal of the project is to have 2022 Greenreality partners in the entire province by the end of 50. At least ten of these are to be found in Imatra.

- This is a good opportunity for us to promote sustainable business operations and low-carbon Imatra together with companies. I believe that local companies will also seize the opportunity and commit to climate work through this as well, the project leader Eetu Ahlberg The city of Imatra tells.

In Lappeenranta, the project continues the Greenreality partners activity

In Lappeenranta, the project continues the familiar Greenreality partners activity, within the framework of which brick-and-mortar companies that have made a partnership commitment have participated in the implementation of sustainable development measures.

- The continuation of the operation is very important so that the members of the network can continue to receive support and advice in environmental and climate matters if necessary, says the project employee Valtteri Manninen From the city of Lappeenranta.

- In addition, the partnership model already in use will be expanded by adding concrete goals for companies related to reducing carbon emissions.

Greenreality partners are encouraged to join as a climate partner as well. Climate partner companies are required to commit to ambitious greenhouse gas emission reductions.

The climate partnership project starts in May 2021 and ends in November 2022. The project receives funding from the Ministry of the Environment Municipal climate projects from the program. The project's budget is €99.
