In recent years, the city of Imatra has developed the sports environment of the Ukonniemi area for enthusiasts of various sports, with the aim of increasing the appeal of the area as a sports tourism destination. The development of bicycle tourism increases the popularity of cycling as a comprehensive form of movement, bringing cycling closer to people through recreational cycling and bicycle tourism can increase enthusiasm for cycling in everyday life as well. A larger number of cyclists increases the need to invest more in cycling infrastructure, safety and products and services.
In 2021, the Ukonniemi multi-use route project will be implemented, for which funding has been granted by the ELY Center of Southeast Finland. The financiers are the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the city of Imatra. The planning, construction, renovation and marking of the multi-use trail in Imatra's Ukonniemi area is carried out to improve the availability of nature tourism destinations and services. The goal of the project is to increase the number of domestic and international nature tourists visiting the city of Imatra and other municipalities in the province, the services offered and their use, i.e. to increase the tourism income of the region.
The project implements the multi-use routes presented in the multi-use routes planning project implemented by the South Karelia Association for the areas of Ukonniemi, Lammassaari, Mustalammi and Karhukallio. The route safeguards the preservation of natural diversity and prevents the emergence of an uncontrolled network of paths in a pristine natural environment. During the project, a new activity will be created that will connect to the existing nature, fitness trail and trail network in Ukonniemi and the surrounding areas. The purpose of the trails is to meet the needs of both mountain bikers and other trail users. It increases the safety of those moving in the area and prevents further wear and tear of the natural area and thus promotes the preservation of biodiversity. In addition, this project also explores the possibilities of building a multi-use route from Mikonsaari to neighboring islands of Saimaa in the future (Malonsaari, Mikonsaari, Haapasaari).
