Mansikkala school center's information technology acquisitions with the environment in mind

In the new school center in Mansikkala, the installation of new computers, monitors and ICT equipment is currently underway.

This is a large purchase and implementation, as the school center will, among other things, use around 900 new computers and more than 100 smart/presentation screens to replace the old ones. Work can be done between the end of July and the beginning of August in a sweaty hat in the new school center, but the old technology is already starting to be removed from the moving units, says the information and digital services manager Marko Hyvönen.

The new ICT equipment was acquired while also taking into account small measures to support the city's climate program

In the procurement phase, with regard to new equipment and supplies, efforts have also been made to take the environment into account. Attention has been paid to the energy efficiency of smart displays, and any extra parts in the delivery packaging are returned to the manufacturer for reuse. On the other hand, the new student devices are delivered in boxes of five instead of individual packages. This significantly reduces packaging waste.

Small actions make a difference, summarizes Hyvönen's information management about the choices made when purchasing equipment.

The schools' old ICT devices are recycled in an information-secure manner

The city of Imatra utilizes 3stepIT's lifecycle management model in the management of its IT equipment while reducing emissions (CO2), energy consumption and amount of e-waste.

3stepIT's life cycle and service model supports the implementation of the City of Imatra's Climate Program 2020–2030 in terms of the greenhouse effects of consumption and materials, as well as sustainable solutions and choices, says the leader of the city's Climate Wise project Eetu Ahlberg.

As many as 98 percent of decommissioned devices continue to be used in a new destination, so the resources used to manufacture the devices are used more efficiently, and emissions are reduced by about a third. In the end, defective and end-of-life devices that have been in use by the city are responsibly recycled - in accordance with the principles of the circular economy, some of the materials can therefore be used again.
