The move to the Mansikkala school center could be compared to family life

At the construction site of the Mansikkala school center, Finland's largest wooden school, which will open its doors in August, is being finished at a fast pace. The transfer of old educational institutions, and the merger, to new premises is like families moving to 50 apartment buildings.

School network reform project coordinator Heidi Tamminen has been working at the school center since July 2019. During the last month, the change has become concrete with real action.

In June, packing, collecting and placing the goods in temporary storage began. As soon as the schools ended, I started marking the movables: what goes and what stays. Of course, planning has been done since the fall, says Tamminen.

Furniture, household and computer equipment, small hardware and, among other things, 80 Smart screens are transported to the school center. The daycare movers recently had a day of joy, because heaps of new toys and games have just been brought into the small children's premises. Martela employees work as movers at the school center.

The gyms are starting to be full of stuff, from moving boxes to desks. We deliberately do not bring all the movables yet, because the space quickly runs out because not all areas are ready for use. For example, musical instruments from Tainiotalo are only brought directly to the destination, i.e. to the classrooms, Tamminen explains.

With the school network reform, Imatra offers children clean learning environments. Because of this, careful choices have had to be made when placing new and old goods.

Of the old furniture, we can only keep those that can be properly cleaned, if they have been in rooms with indoor air problems, says Tamminen.

Quick, but well-considered solutions in the name of cooperation

The situation with regard to moving lives every day at the construction site also in surprising ways. Tamminen's phone rings steadily, even now.

I try to prepare for as many situations as possible, but in this job I've learned that you shouldn't lock things in too absolutely. You have to be flexible and make new, fast solutions every day, Tamminen describes the hectic nature of his job description.

Together with the project coordinator, a multi-professional team makes the move. Cooperation has played a significant role in ensuring smooth coordination.

Our regular meetings with professionals from different fields, both teaching staff and digital experts, have been very important for the move. There are many contacts around whose expertise you can rely on when questions arise, says Tamminen.

Communication between the builder and the mover plays a significant role. The employees who have already been building the school center for two years know the whole in different ways than the movers who got to know the site for a month. Tamminen is always faced with decisions:

Surprises cannot be avoided. Builders know how to handle certain practical things, and my job is to create solutions to make things run smoothly. Now we have to decide how to replace the entrance that is closed due to construction work. The moving goods must be delivered in one way or another.

Thursday 30.7. the school center and its courtyards will be handed over from the builder YIT to the movers once and for all.
