At Imatra, movable piers, a suspension bridge over the old bed of Vuoksi are being planned, and a guided underwater diving site is being developed.

Vuoksi is an increasingly important nearby destination for tourism and many kinds of activities. There are interesting natural and cultural attractions on Vuoksi's shores, and there are several companies operating around Vuoksi that offer versatile tourism and recreation services. Vuoksi is a place worth coming from further afield. So far, however, Vuoksi as a tourist destination is relatively little known.

The Visit Vuoksi project develops the sustainable use and accessibility of Vuoksi so that more and more tourists can easily visit Vuoksi and experience the region's unique nature, its special history between East and West, and its interesting locality through various tourist services and experiences.

The key measures of the project are:

  • creation of common criteria for sustainable tourism and recreation use of Vuoksi for Finnish and Russian tourism and recreation operators
  • Creating a Vuoksi sustainable tourism route from various destinations in Finland and Russia
  • Development and renovation of Vuoksi tourist route destinations; At Imatra, movable piers are being planned for Vuoksi, a suspension bridge is being planned over the old bed of Vuoksi, and a guided underwater diving site is being developed.
  • Making info materials about the Vuoksi tourist route

- Movable piers have been requested in Vuok for several years. They should be used in various events. The public could be transported to the piers for bigger boats, for example, from Imatrankoski to Virra park or to boat races on the shores of Vuoksi. The piers could be moved as needed, says the project manager Minna Kähtävä-Marttinen.

The project creates the conditions for a new kind of international visibility of the Vuoksi region as a sustainable and climate-friendly nearby tourism destination. The project enables a new kind of entrepreneurship and improves the quality of the environment through the creation and implementation of criteria for the sustainable use of Vuoksi.
