A new, smaller station building will replace it.

The fate of Imatra's central transport station is demolition. Today, as a guide, the city council gave its representative at the general meeting permission to plan the disposal of the old property.

Imatra space and safety manager Sami Turunen presented the property condition reports to the board. Based on them, the central transport station is in bad condition. The estimate of structural technical condition studies for acute repairs in the next four years is more than two million euros.

All surfaces would also have to be renewed. Over time, this would increase the costs to around eight million euros, Turunen states.

The real estate company is owned by ten different parties. The largest of these are the city of Imatra, Senate properties, the National Pension Institute and Mehiläinen. The largest owners are not willing to invest in renovating an empty building.

We will present to the general meeting of the real estate company that the property will be demolished and the business premises of the Imatra region will start a project plan to build a compact and modern station on the site, says Turunen, who is the chairman of the board of the real estate company.

The structural changes, the change in the operating culture and the current market situation have caused the fact that currently around 85 percent of the premises are empty. The city currently pays about 150 euros per year for empty premises. In addition, the condition of the property is poor.

If things progress as planned, the property built in 1977 can be demolished in the summer of 2021 at the earliest.
