Koulukatu will be closed to through traffic due to work on the roundabout

Also changes to bus routes on 6.4. from Traffic on Tainonkoskentie passes the construction site in two lanes.

The construction of the Koulukatu and Tainionkoskentie roundabout will begin with preparatory work on April 1.4.

Koulukatu will be closed to through traffic on April 6.4. The closure area starts immediately from the Sampo exit to Tainionkoskentie.

At the same time, i.e. 6.4. starting on Tainionkoskentie, traffic will be limited to only two lanes on the Vuoksi side instead of four lanes during the works (check the attachment).

The works will affect traffic in the area in many ways. The reduced speed limit (30 km/h) continues on Tainionkoskentie.

─ We hope that motorists will follow the restrictions so that the work can be done safely for everyone. The situation is made easier by the fact that there is now little other traffic in the area due to school children's distance learning and the swimming pool being closed, city engineer Päivi Pekkanen says.

The construction of the roundabout will also affect bus traffic when Koulukatu is closed. Instead of Koulukatu, the buses run a circular route between Keskuasema and Imatrankoski (photo).

The work on the roundabout will last until the end of July. The exception arrangement for bus routes is valid until the end of the summer timetable period.

Long-distance services and line 4 run along Tainionkoskentie as before.

Kreate Oy won the contract competition for the construction of the roundabout. Eight bidders participated in the contract competition. The price of the contract is around 1,5 million euros.

What changes?

  • At the roundabout, Koulukatu will have its own turning lane from the direction of Mansikkala. The actual roundabout is single-lane.
  • Also from the roundabout in the direction of Imatrankoski, Tainionkoskentie will become a single lane. Up until now, the single lane has started at the Ruokosuonkatu junction.
  • There will be student drop-off areas on both sides of Tainionkoskentie.
  • An elevated crosswalk will be built at the junction of Koulukatu and Karjaportinkatu. It also acts as a retarder and thus increases traffic safety for those coming from the direction of Koulukatu.
  • A new underpass tunnel will be built under Koulukatu near the exit. Something similar was already done near the Keskuskatu roundabout.
  • The entire block area (Tainionkoskentie, Ruokosuonkatu, Karjaportinkatu and Koulukatu) will have a speed limit of 30 kilometers. Due to the relocation of the water main, Tainionkoskentie already has a reduced speed limit at the school site.
