Sewage overflow into Lampsijoki

Release
17.2.2020 16:59
The environmental effects are likely to be very minor.

A technical malfunction at the Meltola wastewater pumping station caused an overflow into the Lampsijoki today, Monday 17.2 February.

On Sunday 16.2. and towards Monday night, it rained almost continuously, which, together with the amount of water caused by the melting of the snow, showed itself as an increased flow in the sewer network.

As a result of a technical malfunction, the pumps stopped working at Meltola's wastewater pumping station after eight in the morning this morning.

By-pass pumping can be arranged for the pumping station by tomorrow at the latest. It is estimated that up to 10 cubic meters have overflowed from the pumping station into Lampsijoki. The final overflow amount will be determined in the coming days.

Samples have been taken of the waste water that ended up in the Lampsiinjoki overflowteet, which are studied in the laboratory. The overflow is mainly rainwater and meltwater, so the environmental impact is likely to be minor. The overflow might have a temporary effect on Lampsiinjoki's recreational use, if this had happened in the summer.
