The transfer of the water main is underway, the actual changes will start at the end of March.

The drawings of the Tainionkoskentie and Koulukatu roundabout are ready.

These have been presented twice to the city council. Based on the feedback received there, changes have been made to improve traffic safety, city engineer Päivi Pekkanen says.

At the roundabout from the direction of Mansikkala, a separate turning lane was added to Koulukatu. The actual roundabout is single-lane.

Kääntyvi's own lane facing Koulukatu squeezed 10 teacher parking spaces from the parking lot of the former Krimi House. They were moved to Karjaportikatu. Karjaportinkatu will be one-way and one-lane in the future.

Waste areas along Tainionkoskentie

From the Koulukatu exit in the direction of Imatrankoski, Tainionkoskentie becomes one lane. Up until now, the single lane has started at the Ruokosuonkatu junction.

The student drop-off area was also separated from the carriageway by a median lane. There are drop-off areas on both sides of Tainionkoskentie.

In addition, a raised crosswalk was added to the intersection of Koulukatu and Karjaportinkatu. It also acts as a retarder and thus increases traffic safety for those coming from the direction of Koulukatu.

New underpass and reduced driving speed

The roundabout makes traffic flow smoothly when the traffic lights go away. A new underpass tunnel will be built under Koulukatu near the exit. Something similar was already done near the Keskuskatu roundabout.

This will certainly increase the safety of users of the new school center in traffic significantly, Pekkanen states.

The entire block area (Tainionkoskentie, Ruokosuonkatu, Karjaportinkatu and Koulukatu) will have a speed limit of 30 kilometers. Due to the relocation of the water main, Tainionkoskentie already has a reduced speed limit at the school site.

The works hinder traffic in the spring and summer

The contract bidding phase for the roundabout is currently underway.

The construction works will be completed by the end of July. Finishing work may also be done in August-September.

The renovations will cause disruptions to traffic throughout the spring and summer. They are always announced before major changes.

The city hopes for patience from motorists and light traffic users.
