Imatra is Finland's national wonder

Imatra was declared a national wonder in February 2018.

Why?

The reasons are solid. Imatra is a South Karelian city on the eastern border, where there are many things that are unique both by national and international standards.

Here are some examples:

  • Finland's oldest tourist attraction and at the same time a national landscape: The Imatra rapid cuts through the town. Koski is the first tourist destination that came to Finland from abroad following the example of Catherine the Great (1772).
  • Finland's oldest nature reserve Kruununpuisto was founded in 1842. The park is located right in the heart of the city.
  • The largest hydroelectric plant In Finland (Fortum).
  • The largest street track race in the Nordic countries and the only one in Finland: once in the summer, we ride through the city center at a speed of more than three hundred kilometers per hour on motorcycles (Imatranajo).
  • Voted the most beautiful building in Finland: State hotel.
  • Theater Imatra has more spectators than residents of the city. It was decided to build the newest theater building in Finland just over 30 kilometers from the second newest theater building in Finland.
  • Music hall igloo: on a frosty night in February, you can listen to a concert produced by instruments made of ice in SounDome's igloo.
  • Strong economy: the city has made a profit for the last ten years. Although the recession tried, Imatra has survived quite well.
  • The camp site of the national teams: In ten years, a unique concentration of sports and wellness tourism, Ukonniemi, has appeared on the shores of Saimaa. National teams and international ice hockey clubs camp there. There are more places to stay in the Ukonniemi-Rauha area than in a large Finnish city.
  • Three athletes at the Winter Olympics: Investing in sports has created the basis for success. The city has three Olympic-level athletes in the winter games (biathlon skier Venla Lehtonen, cross-country skier Lari Lehtonen and snowboarder Matti Suur-Hamari).
  • Three spa hotels: There are a total of three spas within a radius of six kilometers (Valtionhotelli, Imatra Kylpylä and Holiday Club Saimaa).
  • The largest log hotel in the Nordic countries.
  • The longest first snow slope: Southern Finland's longest first snow slope (5 km) is opened in Imatra every year in October.
  •

The examples above show that Imatra is truly special. The city has more than a landscape or a single attraction.

- In the same way that national landscapes reflect Finland's identity, Imatra as a national wonder also describes the country's history well, ever since the Kalevala. Although life has been tested over the centuries, Vuoksi has always stood on its feet, made history of industrialization and tourism, created culture and raised world-class athletes, says Niina Malm, chairwoman of the city council.

Imatra is even the most famous city in Finland with less than 50 inhabitants (Innolink study 000/5).

The small town identity can also be big.

At the event, Imatra's Kansallisihme page was announced, it can be found at kansaliihme.fi
