The possibility to change Swedish to another language in the sixth class.

The city of Imatra has approached all parents of 5th grade students regarding the language issue. Parents are asked if they want their children to take a language test next year. This would mean that students do not have to study Swedish as a compulsory subject from the 6th grade. Students are offered the opportunity to study another foreign language, which the student has not yet started studying, instead of Swedish.

Cities and municipalities have the opportunity to petition the Board of Education on 23.2. by promises to carry out a language experiment from autumn 2018. The one-year trial is not yet binding for a longer period of time.

 - If the student participates in the experiment in the 6th grade, the guardian can notify the teacher before the start of the 7th grade that the student will stop participating in the experiment. In that case, the organizer of the education must arrange remedial education for the student to start studying another domestic language, says Minna Rovio, head of educational services.

The welfare board of the city of Imatra will discuss the matter at its meeting on Tuesday, January 23.1.

 - If, based on the survey, there are enough guardians interested in participating in the experiment, i.e. at least 15 per language group, we propose to the welfare board that it authorize the officials to continue preparing the matter and preparing the application. Based on the answers to the survey, it will be decided for which languages a possible trial license will be applied for.

If there is enough interest in the language experiment, it will be implemented at the Koske school center, which focuses on languages and culture.

This survey is indicative, the final binding announcement about participation in the language trial will be made between 29.1 and 9.2. between.

The last day to answer the guardians' survey is Friday, January 12.1.
