The city of Imatra promotes sustainable mobility with shared cars

Release
7.5.2019 18:30
Imatra has received a shared car service, which offers hybrid cars for the use of city employees during office hours. Outside of office hours, the cars are used by townspeople and tourists.

City dwellers and travelers can use the service and reserve a car online at www.24rent.fi/.

The service will initially be tested among the city's employees in a pilot group of about 20 people. The size of the pilot group is limited, as two to three cars are initially used, and based on the calculations, significantly more cars would be needed in order to cover all business trips made by the city's personnel. In October 2019, experiences about the functionality of the service and the development needs will be collected from the citizens and the pilot group of the city's employees.

The shared car service is provided by 24 Rental Network, with which the city has signed an agreement until the end of August 2020.

Cost savings and ecology
The city of Imatra's climate program has set a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Transport plays a significant role in emission reductions. Change will not happen by itself, which is why the city has determinedly started to promote alternative modes of transportation to the private car. Imatra wants to be a pioneer and support the sustainable movement of the city's employees, as well as offer residents and tourists new opportunities to move or visit Imatra more sustainably.

- In the longer term, carpooling can achieve cost savings through the reduction of mileage allowances for business trips. Hybrid cars will be introduced, as the city wants to move towards lower-emission traffic. We also want to increase the opportunity for city employees to arrive at work by bike or on foot, even if it is necessary to travel by car during the working day, says the city engineer Päivi Pekkanen.

From the residents' point of view, a shared car can only be a solution for the occasional need for a car or as a replacement for a second car. An owned car often sits more than 90% stationary, but still accumulates costs for its owner all the time. When using a shared car, you only pay for the time the car is used. Insurance payments, taxes and maintenance are not felt in the wallet of the user of a shared car.

- A shared car is especially suitable for individuals or households that drive less than 10 kilometers per year. In households of two or more, a shared car works well as a complement to one's own car in different situations and is a good substitute for, for example, the second car in the family, he estimates Elina Toiminen 24 from Rental Network.
