Artists are asked for 2-3 drafts, users are consulted in the final selection.

On Tuesday, the steering group of the service network reform chose a working couple as the creators of the percentage art at the Mansikkala school center Sirpa Hynninen - Vesa-Ville Saarinen.

Artists are asked for 2-3 sketches. The final work is selected from these sketches.

─ Users also get to influence the final solution. We ask the opinion of the staff and the student union, chairman of the steering group Anna Helminen says.

The Mansikkala school center will be completed by autumn 2020. The artwork must also be ready by then.

The art is placed on the wall in the wooden school

The total price of the art purchase is 60 euros, and it includes the work of the sketch phase and the final artwork.

The artwork will be placed in the immediate vicinity of the main entrance of the school center, on the outer wall of the wooden school.

The selection of the artist has been prepared before the steering group in the city's milieu working group. The group has asked the art coordinator for help From Reetta Aho. During the preparation phase, he went through the websites of 60 potential implementers. Portfolios were requested from five artists or groups of artists.

─ The chosen pair of authors were strong in their performances. We have a strong expectation that this acquisition will be an investment in the future, because the value of the production of the selected working pair is believed to increase in the future, chairman of the environment working group, director of urban development Topiantti Ääks says.

"Real work of an artist"

All candidates were required to have some kind of connection to Imatra. Saarinen has been teaching art at Imatra for 30 years. Hynninen has both studied and taught at an art college.

─ Of course, our choice is a great thing. It is the real work of the artist when the work becomes publicly visible, Hynninen states.

The work couple has already envisioned the work.

─ We have thought that the work would somehow be related to the school world. The choice of materials should be discussed with, for example, the architect. A big space surely requires bigger things to do, Saarinen reflects.

The city has already outlined that percentage art will be procured for all three new school centers. The percentage principle is a national funding model for art acquisitions, where approximately one percent of the construction project's allocation is used for art.

Vuoksenniska's art acquisition is being completed this spring. It will be implemented Jarkko Liutu. Preparations for the art acquisition of Koski School Center also started on Tuesday.
