Satu Forss-Tiippana and Terhi Mäkiranta, co-chairs of the municipal initiative "People's vote on Imatra's schools", brought the initiative's signatures to the town hall on Monday morning. Based on the organizers' calculations, the initiative collected at least 1315 signatures.

An initiative by five members of the municipality, who are active in the parent committees of Imatra schools, calls for a referendum on whether to create three large school campuses for the city or whether to develop a school network based on the neighborhood school principle.

Of the 1315 signatures of the municipal initiative, 695 were submitted to the electronic initiative in the kuntalaisaloite.fi service and 620 names were collected on paper lists. There were more signatures in total, but the initiators were not sure if all the signatures were acceptable. The city of Imatra is currently checking the signatures.

The authors of the municipal initiative are satisfied with their achievement.

- You can be satisfied with the fact that the goal was achieved in less than a month, rejoices Terhi Mäkiranta, who lives in Tainionkoski.

Satu Fross-Tiippana, who is active in Meltola, has calmed down.

- It's a little easier now. Yes, it caused stress when you had to worry about whether the names would be filled in time.

The initiators hope that the initiative would be discussed at the city council meeting on 24.10. The preparation of city officials also aims at this.

If five percent of the municipality's voters demand a referendum, the city council must process the initiative without delay. Five percent of those entitled to vote in the city of Imatra are slightly less than 1200 people.
