The construction of the icy concert hall has started, the opening is at the end of January. Traditional instruments are also made by freezing.

A large ice igloo serving as a concert hall will rise in Varpasaari, Imatra. It's bigger than ever before. In the future, the icy concert hall can accommodate 50 people.

─ The igloo becomes enormously tall, about 5,5 meters. It is 11 meters in diameter. Our previous igloos have been eight meters in diameter and four meters high, one responsible for construction Juuso Partanen says.

He, Jere Nuppola ja Toni Kainulainen are the driving forces behind SounDome.

Concerts will be organized in the igloo, where the instruments are also built from ice.

─ The instruments are very old in style. They include, for example, udu, marimba and tidgeridoo. This year we will also try making a cello out of ice.

The first concert and the opening of the igloo are planned to be held on January 24.1. Concerts tinted with colorful light effects are performed every week on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays until mid-March, weather permitting.

For a bigger igloo, the people at SounDome have created a new mold.

─ It took about a kilometer of tape, Partanen laughs.

Water for freezing is taken from Vuosi. Part of the ice is taken from natural lakes. Now, the fact that water has accumulated on the ice in recent days has become a challenge.

The city of Imatra supports the construction of an ice igloo and concerts with 25 euros.

─ We are really satisfied with the city's assistance. With it, we can employ two people. We also employ local musicians. The price of concert tickets could also be reduced slightly.

There are seven players in the orchestra. In previous years, the event was done only by workers.

─ The city wanted to support this amazing ice igloo and concert series, because the city's event offering should be expanded for the winter season as well. The idea of SounDome is great and very original, chairman of the city board Anna Helminen justifies the grant.

Due to the expansion of the event, Partanen and Nuppola have founded the SounDome association.
