Liutu was chosen as the creator of percentage art. The visual artist is a graduate of the school.

Imatra-born visual artist Jarkko Liutu has been chosen as the creator of the art for Vuoksenniska's new school campus.

- I have to admit that the information sounded very flattering. Having lived the first 30 years of his life in Imatra, this feels especially great, Liutu commented.

Liutu was chosen by the three-person art working group responsible for the school's art procurement. The groundwork done by art coordinator Reetta Ahonen strongly influenced the choice.

- I went through several possibilities. Liutu sifted through it based on his previous works. Jarkko is an experienced creator and has participated in competitions. Of course, it is also a plus that he has a connection to Imatra, says Ahonen.

Liutu, who currently lives in Savonlinna, studied middle school and high school in Vuoksenniska. He graduated from Koulunmäki in 2003. After that, he always worked as a substitute at the school when asked.

- There are many positive memories of the school. Surely your own experiences have an effect in this job, when you know the environment so well, Liutu thinks.

Liutu makes a work or a set of works. According to the preliminary plan, Liutu will prepare a few sketches by the end of December. From these sketches, the art working group selected the Easter one for the continuation. School staff and students are also asked for their opinions on the drafts.

The working group requires that the work fits both the environment, the buildings and the school yard. In addition, according to Ahonen, there could be some element of nature in it, because Vuoksenniska is profiled in nature education. Liutu has already outlined the work. The work will not be abstract art, but performative.

- In some way, the work will definitely be connected to nature. As material I will use aluminum and bronze. In this work, safety-related issues must be taken into account, as in general in public places, the works are prone to being touched.

Otherwise, in Liutu's opinion, the school yard does not limit the making of art in any way.

- My habit is not to make such radical expressions. In art, you can also comment subtly.

Liutu's work is so-called percentage art. In other words, part of the costs of the new Vuoksenniska school will be used for art. The maximum price for Liutu's work is 45 euros, which corresponds to about 000 percent of the new school's construction costs. Most of the funding goes to material costs.

The artwork will be completed side by side with the new school.

- The work must be ready by May 2019, Liutu opens the contract terms.

Jarkko Liutu signed the contract for the artwork at the office of Imatra YH-rakenuttaja Oy today, Thursday.

Percentage art

The percentage principle is a national funding model for art acquisitions, where approximately one percent of the construction project's allocation is used for art.

In the 2000s, the principle has started to be implemented in Finland in many ways: as a principle decision in the municipality's public construction, as a condition for the donation of land, with the help of an art program and with a fund model.
