Imatra to lead the mobility renewal project in South Karelia

Release
18.9.2018 13:35
The city of Imatra is responsible for the development of public transport in the province between 2018 and 2020. Imatra is also a pilot city where the public transport ticket system will be renewed as part of the project.

Acting as project manager of the project Jukka Partinen says that the open ticket product is the basis of movement.

- In the project, we are looking for a ticket solution based on a personal Travel Account, which can be connected to the applications of different service providers.

- The goal is to digitally combine the schedule information with the schedule information of schools and recreational facilities, for example. The pilot system built by 2020 is planned to be expanded to the entire province and its public transport in a later project, explains Partinen.

The new ticket system is planned to be introduced at Imatra during 2019.

City engineer Päivi Pekkanen according to the renewal of the ticket system will not affect the prices of Imatra's local transport.

- The renewal of the ticket system aims to secure functioning public transport for everyone in Imatra and South Karelia. The population and density of South Karelia is low, which makes organizing transport expensive. When the information in the systems is open and usable by different service providers, we will overcome the cost challenge and be able to offer even smoother and more attractive public transport, sums up Pekkanen.
