The project design for the renovation of the Virta Cultural Center has been completed.

Two options have been made for the renovation. A decision on whether to proceed will be made in the autumn.

The needs assessment and project planning for the renovation of the Virta Cultural Center have been completed.

A draft plan was drawn up for a renovation, which would also include functional improvements to the building. The preliminary cost estimate for this plan is EUR 27 million.

In addition, a cost estimate was calculated for the technical renovation. The cost of the renovation, excluding functional improvements, is estimated to be approximately 24 million euros.

The results of the project planning were presented to the city council at evening school on Monday, June 8.6. No decisions have been made.

– The goal is to make a decision on the continuation of the renovation in the autumn. This is a major investment, which naturally ties in with the work of the economic steering group. The work of the economic steering group is in progress, the mayor Matias Hilden says.

The activities of the Virta Cultural Center are planned to be carried out during the temporary renovation of the old city hall. Operations in the current premises will continue at least until the end of spring 2027.

Background: Virta Cultural Center renovation

The Virta Cultural Center was completed in 1986 and requires renovation.
The Culture House houses, among other things, the main library, the City Museum, the Art Museum and the Virta Institute. The building hosts concerts and other events and has remote working and meeting rooms.
Preparations for the renovation began in the spring of 2025 with a needs assessment.
The project design has since been carried out in collaboration with users and city residents. Arkkitehdit Tommila Oy was responsible for the architectural design. In addition, Nomaji maisema-arkkitehdit Oy, Sistem Oy and Akukon Oy, as well as traffic designer Seppo Karppinen, have also been involved in the design.
The planning will consider the renovation of the entire building and the functionality of the premises in the future.
Project planning was completed in the summer of 2026. The decision on implementation will be made in the fall of 2026.
